Weekend celebration

In 1997 the UK transferred sovereignty over Hong Kong back to the Peoples Republic of China. This year was the 15 year celebration. Well "celebration" depending on who you are asking. From what I gather, "HK has a high degree of autonomy from Beijing, but China's leaders in Beijing have resisted public pressure for full democracy in the city".  No talk of politics from we Gweilos (Cantonese slang word for foreigners).

Because "Handover" is celebrated July 1, we decided to celebrate a two for one holiday weekend and include the 4th of July....which basically meant having a BBQ with friends. We so enjoy Bill and Kim Wade. Great people.

Lucky for us, Handover included a half hour spectacular firework display we enjoyed from our deck. We pretended it was for the 4th of July as well.

David and I decided to enjoy a day of hiking the following day. The hike begins with a serene lake. It's as though it is taunting you to enjoy the peace before you ascend the grueling trails ahead.

As you ascend, the views are so beautiful you are encouraged to keep going.

The first trail is named "Violet Hill". David and I renamed it "Violent Hill". After Violet Hill, "Twin Peaks" is next. We renamed this hike "Evil Twin Peaks".  Stairs straight up a mountain cannot be captured in pictures. I've tried.

The views are insane.

We then got to the bottom where all of the normal people were spending a relaxing day at the beach.

We are convinced they did not have as much fun as we did. Happy 4th of July and Handover!

  1. That firework show is amazing. The water at the beach actually looks pretty nice. I thought it was just muddy-is that not the case?
